Seeing the Potential Beyond First Impressions

Workways is celebrating a monumental achievement for Jadyn, a Workforce Australia participant who has successfully transitioned into meaningful employment, proof that the right opportunity can completely transform a life.

For three years, Jadyn, navigated significant barriers to permanent and sustainable employment. Autistic traits, including reduced eye contact, stimming, and communication differences impacted his presentation in interviews, and without a driver’s license, transportation was a constant hurdle, further limiting his employment prospects.

The Journey to Finding the Right Fit

With support from the Workways team, Jadyn worked hard on developing an employment pathway. After engaging in counselling in 2023, he initially set his sights on retail, completing courses but struggling to break into the industry. While many people would be discouraged, Jadyn persisted, expanding his focus to hospitality and obtaining both his Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) and Responsible Gambling (RSG) certificates.

Despite his efforts, Jadyn’s loyalty, reliability, and generous nature were often overlooked by potential employers who struggled to see past his initial presentation.

A New Chapter with Impact Care Services

The turning point came earlier this year when Jadyn began a Work for the Dole placement – a joint initiative between Workways and Impact Care Services which involved building a community garden at the Caddies Community Centre.

The Site Landscaper quickly recognized Jadyn’s potential and took him under his wing, suggesting he apply for a traineeship at Impact Care Services. Though Jadyn had never done physical labour before, he was willing to give it a try – and the results have been astounding.

“This has been one of those transformations where you wouldn’t know it was the same person. All he needed was someone to give him a go, and he is absolutely soaring!” reports Karen who is Jaydyn’s Employment Coach at Workways.

A Complete Transformation

With the wrap-around support and genuine encouragement from Impact Care Services, the changes in Jadyn have been profound:

  • Confidence & Communication: Just two weeks into the traineeship, Jadyn was excitedly sharing his journey, readily offering many exciting stories, and talking animatedly! His confidence and enthusiasm were soaring.
  • Connection: He has made a great friend at work, and they now do everything together.
  • Initiative: He is even giving lifts to other trainees to and from work, actively supporting his colleagues.

We are incredibly proud of Jadyn for persisting, getting outside his comfort zone, and thriving. His story is a testament to the power of looking past first impressions to identify and invest in a person’s potential.
