Empowering Young Lives in Latrobe Valley

In the heart of Latrobe Valley, a dedicated team at Workways is making a lasting impact in the lives of young people with both diagnosed and undiagnosed disabilities. Through their Inclusive Pathways to Employment (IPE) program, two young individuals transitioning out of school have been supported in navigating some of the toughest challenges of their lives—gaining financial independence, securing vital disability support, and preparing for a bright future.

The journey has not been without its hurdles. A significant obstacle faced by these individuals was managing the multitude of medical appointments required to obtain the necessary documentation for financial and disability support. From navigating the intricate systems to ensuring every form was filled correctly, persistence and patience have been key in overcoming these challenges. Yet, with the help of the IPE team at Workways La Trobe Valley, these young people are steadily moving forward.

The first major success came when the team helped secure Youth Allowance for both individuals, providing them with much-needed financial relief. But the journey didn’t end there. With unwavering advocacy, both individuals were recently approved for the Disability Support Pension (DSP), a crucial milestone that provides them with the stability needed to focus on their future.

Now, with financial support in place, the team is preparing to assist these young people with applications for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which will open the door to personalized services designed to help them flourish. While the road has been rocky, the remarkable progress made highlights the importance of advocacy and a strong support network.

For these two young individuals, this is only the beginning. With the foundation of financial stability and the promise of further support, the next steps include exploring training, employment, and future opportunities to ensure they can lead independent, fulfilling lives.
