Roadshow Brings Employment Opportunities to Cairns

Cairns residents will have the opportunity to explore future employment opportunities in a dedicated NDIS job expo this November.

Local employment services providers Workways Australia and MAX Employment, in partnership with National Disability Services (NDS) will deliver an interactive jobs roadshow at the Cairns City Council on 16th November where hopeful candidates are matched to employers based on their skills, interests and organisational fit.

The employment opportunities are a result of the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) rollout in Queensland and will include roles that work within community and disability services.

Leigh Pollard, National jobactive Manager at Workways Australia said the event is an opportunity for their customers to connect directly with employers.

“Our team will meet first with the candidates to provide coaching that focuses on three elements that are difficult to convey on a resume; communication, presentation, and personality. We also use that session to ensure the candidates are eligible to work in a healthcare setting before connecting them with potential employers.”

Beck Honey, Senior Business Manager at MAX Employment emphasised the value of connecting with employers in a supportive and co-ordinated environment.

“Our customers will have the opportunity to meet with an average of 4-5 employers at the expo where they can pitch their experience, qualifications or simply a passion to work within disability services.”

Candidates with limited training in the industry will be supported by Workways Australia and MAX Employment to enrol in further study to gain a Certificate III in Individual Support.

The NDIS has been progressively rolled out across Queensland and is expected to be available across the entire state by June 2019.

The NDIS will provide around 460,000 Australians under the age of 65 years living with a permanent and significant disability the reasonable and necessary support they need to live a comfortable life.

In the Cairns region, NDIS expects to see approximately 2,000 part time equivalent roles generated that will employ workers from Cairns to the Torres Strait.

“Both Workways and MAX Employment are committed to placing customers into work that fits their skillset and interests, so they can enjoy long term, meaningful employment.” said Leigh.

“This roadshow allows both future employees and employers to take a more in-depth and considered view of their needs, providing better outcomes for all involved.”

The Cairns Jobs Roadshow will be held Friday 16th November from 8.00am – 2.00pm in the Cairns City Council Civic Room.
