Diversity on the Buses

Sun Bus, a company that provides transport services across Northern Queensland, recognised the need to diversify its staffing and better reflect the needs of the community.

Matthew Blackman, the Depot Manager in Townsville first approached Workways with his ideas about encouraging more women and indigenous Australians to apply for jobs within their business. He knew that a business that supports diversity would be able to provide a better service to the local community.

Workways hosted interviews with a range of clients who participate in the jobactive program. As a result, Sun Bus hired Fowsiyo Rashid as a casual bus cleaner, providing her with all of the training required and a flexible work environment that suits her needs as a mother of young children.

In addition, Sun Bus have hired a full-time cleaner and are working with Workways to source new drivers. Sun Bus provide a range of career progression opportunities for their staff and encourage them to develop through training.

Workways Recruitment Officer, Vickie Halvorsen said that it was great to see Sun Bus providing so much support to the local community. “Matthew was fantastic to work with, and made sure that the process from interview to employment was quick so that our clients could get into employment as soon as possible.

Sun Bus is a company that cares about its community, and wants to maintain a good reputation with its customers. We’re looking forward to continuing our association with Sun Bus well into the future.” Added Vickie.
