| Tip 5: Staying Motivated while job searching |
TIPS FOR KEEPING MOTIVATED WHILE JOB SEEKINGGetting fired up and ready to go is the first step to getting a job, but it doesn’t always get a quick result. It is easy to become discouraged, and when that happens you start to do less. As you do less, your chances of getting a good outcome decrease., perseverance is the key to success, but it might also help to remember the following. Expect knockbacks There are many people looking for jobs, and while you might be good for a job, you might be beaten by someone equally good. It will be disappointing, but that’s a reason to try even harder to get the next one. If you’re serious about getting a job, it will happen. You can only do your best Employers make decisions for all kinds of reasons, and they are not always good ones. Don’t blame yourself for not getting a job. It wasn’t your decision. Do, however, look to see if there was anything you could have done which would be better next time. Take a break Job seeking is hard work if you do it well, so don’t forget to take a break and relax when you’re not doing it. Treat it like a job, when its finished for the day, don’t worry – do something you enjoy to refresh yourself for the next attempt. Be active The worst thing that you can do is to stop or become isolated from people or organisations which help you keep going. Stay Positive You know it might not be easy, so try not to make statements like “I’ll never get a job”. Develop some positive self talk to keep going yourself when you might be discouraged. If you are tired, don’t try to take on too much This may be a better time to achieve simple, quick tasks which don’t require too much concentration. Leave jobs which require your full attention and concentration until a time when you are refreshed. Know your goals and priorities. You need to know where you are heading (direction) and these come through your goals and priorities. If you don’t set priorities, you won’t know which tasks to undertake first. Once you have completed your task, reached your goal etc. give yourself a pat on the back. There is nothing better than recognition (even if it is your own) to increase your levels of motivation. If you are working on motivating another person, acknowledge their achievements (even small steps), any form of encouragement is likely to lead to greater motivation.
