1.RESEARCH

 

Names of the decision makers and Basic information on what the company does, how they do it, and whether they are a realistic option for employment for YOU

 

2. PLAN

 

What will your approach be- is it best by phone, in person or by letter?

 

Canvassing is a numbers game the more you do the better you chances.

Set yourself a target  daily, weekly or monthly. Make it measurable and reward yourself when you achieve each target.

 

Sort your contact list into a priority order - with the ‘hottest’ contacts first, or the ones that are at least warm later in the process. This is so you can gain momentum…get success straight away and keep a positive attitude.

 

With the price of fuel rising make sure you don’t  waste it. Plan your visits  to certain areas at certain times, alternating mornings and afternoons – depending upon the business type. Try to anticipate potential busy times and avoid them. eg. 4.55pm, or knock off time at the factory gate, lunch times in retail areas.

 

3. REHEARSE

 

Prepare what you are going to say and your opening sentence have a list of questions, statements and memory joggers ready for use if required. Your opening sentence should identify skills the employer would really value and you can offer.

 

Parrot the employer’s words  listen carefully to the way that an employer describes their needs, ie ‘team player’, use these words when promoting your skills and attributes. Use similar language to that which was used in the advertisement or position description when writing your application and résumé.

 

Practice  these out loud at home or in front of the mirror or with a friend and Prepare scripts - to use in all situations. Always best to try OPEN questions which start with who, what, where, when or why. This will more likely result in more information rather than a simple YES or NO response.


 

4. REVIEW

 

After each contact  go over what happened, give yourself a score, and give the contact a rating…..cold, warm hot or extremely dangerous!

 

Think - of ways you could have handled your situations differently, re-write scripts.

 

Follow up - follow up and then follow up. If someone has told you to call back then make a note to do it! If someone has helped lots, then send a thank you card. If they say they will be hiring next month, then make a note to call back in 3 weeks.
